Ever found yourself just staring out at the ocean and thinking… “Are there whales out there right now?”
If you’re in Rainbow Beach during whale season, the answer is very often yes!
The coastline here is one of the best spots in Queensland to catch the humpback migration, and there are a few really beautiful places where you might spot them.
Here is where to look.
Rainbow Beach Tours (that's us!)
Want to see whales up close instead of just hoping for a distant splash?
Come out on the water with us!
This is where it gets real. You are not just watching from shore, you are right there with them as they travel along the coastline. Ever seen a whale roll right beside a boat? Or suddenly breach out of nowhere? That is the kind of thing that can happen out here.
And the best part is, we keep everything calm and respectful so the whales are never disturbed. No rushing. No chasing. Just natural moments, as they happen.
If you are thinking “I just want the best chance to actually see them properly” this is it.
From Carlo Sandblow
Have you ever stood on top of a giant sand dune and looked out over endless ocean?
That is Carlo Sandblow.
It is one of those places where you naturally slow down and just take it all in. And during whale season, it gets even better.
Will you always see whales from here? Not every time. But when you do, it is usually something like a distant puff of mist, or a dark shape slowly moving through the water far offshore. Simple, quiet, but unforgettable in its own way.
Maybe bring a camera. Or maybe just enjoy the moment.
Double Island Point Lighthouse
This is one of the most scenic whale watching points in the area.
From the lighthouse, the ocean stretches endlessly in front of you, and during migration season you can sometimes see whales moving along the coastline below. On calm days, they can come surprisingly close.
It is also a place where you often see dolphins and turtles, so even on quieter whale days there is still plenty happening in the water.
Getting there usually involves a beach drive through the national park, which makes the whole experience feel more remote and untouched.
Beautiful, isn’t it? 🏝️
Front Beach
This is the easiest spot to just wander down and keep an eye on the ocean.
No effort needed, just a stretch of sand, a bit of time, and a view of the horizon. Some days you might spot whales passing further out. Other days it is just a peaceful beach moment, which is still pretty perfect in its own way.
It is a nice place to slow down and let the ocean do its thing.
Why People Love It Here...
Whale watching in Rainbow Beach is not about rushing to one “best spot” or chasing a quick sighting. It is about slowing down, taking in the coastline, and experiencing these incredible gentle giants in a calm and respectful way.
Here, the magic is in the natural moments. A distant splash on the horizon, a tail rising through the water, or a breathtaking encounter that happens completely on their terms.
We believe whale watching should always be eco friendly, low impact, and centred around respect for the ocean. That means giving whales plenty of space, minimising noise and disturbance, and allowing them to move naturally through their environment while we simply observe and appreciate the moment.
And if you’d love the most memorable way to experience this, joining Rainbow Beach Tours out on the water is where it truly comes alive. Peaceful, unforgettable, and shared with nature the way it should be.
